Muting when playing a thrashy passage

I've been trying to cover the bass part of Master of Puppets for a quite while, and I've got a problem with muting when playing the "spider riff"...if you know what I'm talking about.

http://www.bigbasstabs.com/metallica...f_puppets.html

The "spider riff" starts from the fourth row in the above page.

My question is how am I supposed to mute other strings when plucking the open Es in that riff....or there's just no need for me to even consider muting when playing a fast riff like that? By the way, I'm a finger style player.

hmm when I think of 'thrashy' I think triplets, much more Battery or Dyer's Eve then the riff in MOP.

Anyway. If you're just worried about muting the open string use either your fretting fingers or your plucking thumb to mute, might be easier with the thumb for this passage.

That's one of the easiest things to mute, as with anything played on the E and A strings exclusively. Not only do higher strings not ring out as much, but your fretting hand it always laid over top of them.

I think I got it. I was just unaware that the open Es were actually already being muted every time I played the next notes in that phrase. Thank you so much!!

Thanks!! I guess I was just unaware of how I was already able to mute the open Es by placing my thumb on it.
