my baby doesn't like the bass sound...

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm pregnant for almost two months now and recently I start to feel that as I start to practice, I feel weird in my belly. It's like the little one is saying "oh I don't want to hear it!"

I've been very careful since the pregnancy: I practice at home only, never stand, only sit while playing so that the weight is on my legs, and I don't use amp but only my audio interface and headphone.

I'm wondering if the low frequency sound has something bad for the baby.

Maybe it's throwing up some horns and banging its head?

First...CONGRATULATIONS !!! As long as there aren't any problems I wouldn't worry about it. Your baby is dancing. When my wife was pregnant with both our children whenever I played some funk in the car the baby would react. Now whenever they hear some Sly, P-Funk or whatever syncopated music I'm listening to, they bounce/dance and try to sing. Now my children are 5yo and 18mo.

Yea, babies LOVE bass. When my kids were small, they would lie their head down on the floor by the bass cabinet and eventually fell asleep! Hope I wasn't boring them but I really think the low frequencies were very soothing to them. My dog does the same thing!

DISCLAIMER: I'm NOT a doctor. If you truly think there's a problem, go to your doctor and ask.

*ALSO! You're not very far along at less than 2 months. I'd check with my doctor but I doubt it has anything to do with your bass.

People like to stay positive and never want to look at worst case scenarios in these situations but you may have to come to grips with the fact that your baby is a guitard.

No way it could be bad for an unborn child.
But maybe the baby wants to sleep during mum's practice hours?
Maybe it's a good thing to familiarize the lower notes early though, that way the baby will have no trouble sleeping when it's in the room next door sleeping!

I practiced a a lot and loudly when my wife was pregnant with my son 18 years ago. He turned out just fine. He's a bassist now in fact.

Moral of the story: STOP IT. DON'T ENCOURAGE YOUR UNBORN BABY ANY FURTHER. Otherwise in 17 years or so he'll snake the Jazz bass you were looking at from under you and come home and say "Hey dad, look what I bought!" Damn kids.

Seriously, both my kiddo's (18 and 12) had tons of exposure to not only my practicing with mom in the room, but live shows as well. I'm sure yours will turn out beautiful, healthy and well adjusted.

And most importantly Congratulations!

I've heard many musicians claim that the bass is actually soothing for their kids. Keep it up, maybe by six months he'll know a jamerson line or two.

First--ask your doctor.

Second, you might want to try a reduced volume with your headphones. I suspect no one knows what it is like inside of a mother sonically. There could be wolf notes or who knows what going on in there. For example, sound is much louder under water. (By the way, I am not trying to be funny or disrespectful.) Further, if you ask the question, I am guessing that you are concerned so it is better to be safe than second guess yourself. Once your baby is born--well, that's a different story. My two cents, YMMV, IMO, and all that.

I really doubt that the baby itself is having a reaction. First of all, you're too early in your pregnancy, and second of all, the consensus is that any music is a good thing for infants in the making. However, your innards are all jumbling and mixing around in there to make room as the baby grows, not to mention shifts in your body chemistry, that's part of every pregnancy. I suspect that what you're feeling is that either the weight or the vibration of the bass is affecting YOU, not the baby, in unaccustomed ways and that's making you uncomfortable. If you are really concerned, ask your doctor.

After all, when you go get ultrasounds, they are firing sound waves directly at your baby. Both of my newborns absolutely loved to be in the room with me playing. They would alternate accordingly from being soothed and relaxed to excited and happy ! Play away !

When my first wife was pregnant with my only daughter, back in 1976, I worked stage setup for a showcase of a Jamaican band at Nashville's ExitIn. During the performance, the bass was very loud and my daughter started kicking so violently that my wife had to leave the venue and wait for me in the car.

Granted, my wife was significantly more than two months pregnant at that time. Regardless, if I were the OP, I would practice with headphones.

Ultra-sound != sound

The reason it's called ultra-sound is because it is NOT sound.

Provided the volume isn't excessive I think it's good for the child.

My wife was carrying our youngest through rehearsals and performance of the Mikado and my youngest has always loved Gilbert and Sullivan. I'm convinced the exposure in the womb is the reason.

Um, are you sure you want to ask this question of a bunch of bass players?

Actually, the reason it's called ultrasound is because it's sound waves beyond the limits of human hearing.
