Are my fingers weird?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive just started playing bass recently, and I am working on having a finger per fret on my left hand. When I try to do this, it seems like my middle and ring fingers kind of curve in towards eachother while they are arched. If my fingers are perfectly straight, its not a problem, but then I can't put them all on the same string because of length differences.

I guess I am just having some trouble adapting to using one finger per fret, which seems like it would be a really helpful thing to be able to do.

Mine do that too, not much you can do about it.

I just tend to angle them towards the body of the bass more, and shift my hand ever so slightly when I need to do 1 Finger Per Fret with all the fingers on one string.

I hope that makes sense.

oh, PS: PERFECT technique isn't as important as being able to play what's needed, when its needed, or being in the pocket. It sure as heck helps, but I dont believe it to be the be-all end-all of bass playing.

I also get the same thing. I find the 'proper' posture a little painful at times. Have you tried pointing your head more upright?

Yeah, I usually make excuses when I'm not good at something right away too.

It's pretty stupid, too. It's fairly obvious when you're doing something different than most other people. Wanting to find out what is a legitimate question.

Some people just have different bodies. Telling them to "get better" at it is just ludicrous.

My hands are pretty small/narrow and the one fret per finger technique doesnt really work for me on the lower range of the bass, especially on a 35" scale.

I could see it being useful if I wanted to do some Jaco stuff higher up (12th fret range), but I've never had a problem playing what I need to.
