My first solo/bass loop video! Critiques please!

Hey guys,

A Minor Thing

I just uploaded this literally 10 minutes ago, and did it mainly for your help. I consider myself a decent bassist, not snobby, but I have worked hard to get the bit of skill I currently have.

What I would like to know is:

1. I can really feel the bass, I mean, I connect, but in all honesty, in that video, all I know was I played what I thought. Im not fully sure if its minor, if its the correct notes, what scales, modes, positions, etc. I can use.

2. Is it okay? Should I take if off the 'Tube, as it will just get eaten alive? I mean, its nerve wracking, being my first loop/solo video, but I thought it came okay.

The main thing is though, I know what I played sounded good, but I really dont know why or what I did to make it sound good. The theory behind it..

Anything helps guys! Questions, misunderstanding, etc., just ask. Im not modest, nothing phases me. Say it loud, say it proud. The worst I can do is practice what you tell me!

Thanks!
J.

It's good! A bit too bassy in tone in my opinion though... my speakers could barley handle it.

I wear Hollister more for the comfort factor, not the fitting in factor. Clearence Hollister shirts are some of the cheapest, most comfortable shirts out there.

Plus, I got away with wearing it at gold practice.

Headphones should solve the speaker problem, it did for me at least.

Thanks Tommy!

Cool. For advice, strive to be humble, the best usually are.

Hand-me-downs are THE best. My favorites is a hurley tee, and my billabong tee. I also love rashguards form my surfing. Yes I do surf, almost everybody in my age group from the Galveston area surfs. It isn't just a beach stereotype, LOL. You should try em...

You're better than I was at your age. What am I saying,...you're better than I am now. I'll second the bit muddy tone that was a bit too bassy for my speakers. I actually don't own a pair of headphones.....I know right.

Oh, looks like you are playing in minor; perhaps pentatonic but don't quote me on that.

Wha?! No headphones! Thats like not having a cell phone!

I know, the quality is pretty bad, but it should hold me over until my dad takes over.

Thanks James!

If it were a bit better skill wise, it could have been a video of me playing over one of your originals!

I saw your name as the last poster, and got nervous.. Bryan.. you are my looping idol.

Just in the way you describe your playing. I've seen a few of your posts saying "I'm good, I know that" ect...not ragging on you! I was told I was great pretty much because I played bass and could read music, got to my head, and then I realized I was not very good. You, however, are a good player. Also, noodling to you video I found that A mixolydian(first chord) G lydian (second chord) went well with it. BTW, I have a vid on youtube called "A minor Thang"...weirded me out seeing your title lol.

it's good. it would make it easier to hear what you're doing if the loop you were using wasn't the same instrument & same register as most of your solo... if you happen to have a guitar laying around or can just drop that same groove on some keys it would improve the sound of the video. or just play something lower on the neck for the loop part and then solo up high. your playing is good but i had a hard time hearing the solo stand out from the loop for that reason.

as far as being in key yes you're fine. as a young player if you can learn to trust your ears on this kind of thing it's a great asset.

You know whats weird.. Your video gave me the idea for my video name! I saw it today, and it gave me the want to make a video.

And I know what youre saying.. I didnt mean to come off as over confident, just having a bit of confidence is better than having none at all!

Off to watch your video again!

it's great, let's hear more!

an idea you can use...try and layer your tones a bit, like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=804Uwo_K2Fs

here's another approach (1.40 onward):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxZWvhGE7CM

get into it

cheers
