Iv found recently that when i play other peoples basses (jam nights etc) i cannot get the same control and technique as my own, i know this is understandable, different set ups an all but i find it all it all comes down to pickup height.
My right hand plucking technique is almost identical to that of billy sheehan except with 2 fingers not 3. by this i mean i have my pickups as close to the strings as possible because my fingers strike the strings then come to rest or atleast hit the pickup cover and sometimes in the case of the top G and C strings on my 6er i sometimes hit the pickup before the string, a sort of raking i suppose. now iv been playing for over 4 years and have never felt this to be a hinderence with reguards to speed and sound until now when i couldnt perform on a friends fender jazz because the pickups were too low for my technique and so my fingers didnt feel right when playing and i lost alot of my control and flow.
my question is, is this a bad technique to use? should i retrain my hands to adopt a different playing style? if so which 1 for fast hard rock style music?
my technique i guess is an amalgamation of my idols, billy sheehan being the reason i initially raised my pickups and how i get my current techique but iv also notices players like chris wolstenholme using a similiar tech to mine but after plucking his fingers land or hit the string below and is this a type of technique or anything i can pick up. while players like flea have low pickups yet still get fast clean(ish) technique with ease.
in general im a clean technique kinda guy using floating thumb anchoring but my finger playing sounds messy on low pickup heights and those with exposed poles because of a clicking noise when my fingers hit the poles after the strings...
anyhelp or ideas/tips hugely appreciated.
