Need advice for a new bass player

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I'm sorry if this has already been covered (I'm really tight on time and can't look through the old threads right now - sorry about that!). I play Jazz upright myself, and my 14-year old son is just starting on electric. I got him an Ibanez GSR-200 and I need some advice to help him:

1. Can someone recommend a good DVD? He is most interested in Rock right now, but really needs the basics (I'll be helping him, but I'm really rooted in Jazz).

2. The bass arrived today and I tuned it, tightened the screws at the bridge end, but there's still a pretty definite buzz. Is there a way to adjust the nut end, or should I just have it set up straight away?

3. Is there anything technique-wise that he should definitely avoid from the beginning?

(He already knows that he has to practice with the 'nome, and he took Jazz drums when he was really young, so the focus on rhythm is strong.)

Anyway, thanks for any tips.

Betsy

1. Get him a teacher.

Problem solved. It's seriously the best option, if you can afford it.

if you have string buzz, and have alredy altered the string pitch at the bridge, try adjusting the truss rod, usually with an allen key at the headstock or at the heel of the neck where it meets the body

+1 on the teacher. Also, take the bass to have it set up, at the store where you bought it. Don't mess with the truss rod, if you don't know what you're doing. What kind of bass, by the way?
