Need to develop my sense of rythm and eventually groove

So im a metalhead and i've been playing bass for 15 months, having fun with thrash metal songs, even getting to cover some things from AC/DC and Iron Maiden to Coroner or Cannibal Corpse.

Until yesterday i thought i had everything pretty much figured out with bass playing because i've been told that i'm a pretty good player (obviously this was by friends and family so they are not going to tell me that i suck), wich made me think i was doing things right, but while listening some funky tunes a drummer friend sent me last week (jamiroquai and a few funk bands from my country Chile), I found that the genre was a pretty cool thing so the first thing i try to do is to make a cover of ''love foolosophy'' by jamiroquai.
When I have pretty much all the notes figured out by ear i proceed to play along to the song and record it to listen if notes are wrong, etc. and I suddenly realize that my timing and rythmic sense is absolute horsecrap, so I tried again a few more times recording my attempts and i still couldn't get into the feeling of the song, I got to realize my playing is inconsistent and has an absolute lack of feeling and groove.

So what i'm planning to do now is to develop a strong sense of rythm and i don't know exactly how to ask for it but i desesperately need your advice

Too Long; Didnt Read: My rythmic sense sucks and i want to fix it, please help me.

That's a tough song you tried to nail there Funk has lots of syncopations, so try to get familiar with all the 16th notes in a bar. Here's a great video on it:

YouTube - Anthony Wellington teaches rhythm using the rhythm yardstick.

Use a metronome. Practice things really really slowly with it. That will help.

METRONOME ONLINE - free!

Do that thing I keep telling folks about where you pick a one-measure line and play it til you drop. Let your mind wander, but keep going like it's your heartbeat, automatic. Let your hands begin to feel relaxed and floppy. Eventually, you will feel the groove. Or rather, it will find you. Don't stop until it happens. Once it does you will be surprised. I promise.
