Need Help about left hand (fret) fingering sequences

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,
Anybody please help me on this particular exercise.

How are your left hand (fret) fingering sequences?
(on 4 string (tuned E-A-D-G) bass guitar)

Thanks

Hmmm...more than one way to skin a cat, as usual. I would use these (finger/string):

Bar 1:
pinky/G
pinky/D
index/D
middle/D
pinky/D
middle/D
pinky/D
middle/G

Bar 2:
pinky/G
pinky/D
index/D
ring/D
pinky/D
ring/D
pinky/D
index or middle/G

Bars 1 and 2 are each done in a single position, with Bar 2 being one step below the position used for Bar 1. Bars 3 and 4 present a different challenge, because you have to deal with two whole steps for the G A B and F G A, so you need to shift positions in the middle of each bar. For Bar 3:

pinky/G
pinky/D then shift down to
index/D
pinky/D
index/G
pinky/D
index/G
middle/G

For Bar 4:
pinky/G
pinky/D then shift down to
index/D
pinky/D
index/G
pinky/D
index/G
pinky/G, slide pinky up to C for bar 5.

This should give you a feel for the other patterns you may need. You can try this in higher positions mixing in open strings, but my sense is that you want to be able to do this exercise with all fingered notes (I would).

+1 That's a great way of playing it for finger independence and locating, fluidity ; )

The chord shape sequence approach I went with first because I liked the note/s 'bleedover' sounding a little chordal in the sequence.

Thank You verymuch for the replies.
I found them interesting and I'll surely learn them.

But in my case:
Since I always prefer to "go to the bigger strings as soon as possible", to get the 'more bass' sound, which always put me in doubt in how to execute them, because at some points I will find me have to 'barred' my pinky finger on the big A and E strings which is very hard for me to do (either my pinky is too weak or the strings are too big or my forms are wrong, etc).

Can I substitute 'barred' pinky (pinky at A and E strings particularly, but sometimes when in G-D and D-A strings too) with "pinky (at A string) and ring (at E string)" ?

what do you think?

How will you execute the sequence if on the big strings (E and A) ?

thanks again

I wouldn't bar them, I'd 'roll' them with the pinky. Don't keep the tension of two strings at once down by constant pressure, roll your pinky to transfer from one string to the other. Or skip between them with the pinky. Barring/rolling 4th's is an acquired skill, they can be awkward at first, but essential to learn imo.

Problem is Skitch, you've got C# instead of C nat in the first bar. One could still use the index finger to get the C, but that's a pretty large shift to make in the middle of a phrase.
