Hey Guys!

Newbie on this forum

I've been learning how to slap/pop with my ibanez sr300 fretless bass (EXF-4 pickups).
The problem is i'm getting decent slapping sounds on my E string (bounce slap) but higher than that sounds very... nothing lol

I've followed every directions on slapping lessons on youtube clips but no matter how fast and hard i slap my thumb on A & D & G strings, it just doesn't sounds right.

If i slap through the strings, its okay but I want to bounce-slap on the strings.

So, here's my question. Is it okay to do slapping/popping with my fretless bass or do i need a bass w/ fret? and if i do, what are some decent-$200-$300 ish slapping basses?

also, if you could recommend me some good pick-ups, it'll be cool

Thanks guys!

If I had to guess, it isn't your bass. You just aren't good at it yet.

A fretless isn't gonna have the same slap tone as a bass with frets. In the price range you are looking I'd suggest trying a Squier VM Jazz. Lot's of people like the slap tone you can get from a Jazz bass and the new Squiers are vary good for the price. Another idea is get the fretted version of your SR300. They usually go for around $300.
