Theory!
You won't get lucky and write something awesome, it takes hard work...or so I've heard...

Merry Christmas!

Find basslines of songs that you like, then innovate.

what really helped for me was learning to play a chordal instrument (eg. guitar, keyboard)

+100 on the chordal instrument ,honestly I'd say go with Piano, but if that's not available due to financial/spacial issues, go with a classical guitar. +1000 on theory, and I am a big supporter of using ear training to write stuff as well. It becomes much easier to transfer your ideas from your head to your instrument when you know what the intervals sound like.
