new old strap

I just started using an old (20 yrs old) leather guitar strap.
1. I've got it as short as it can go and yet it still hangs too low.
Is it a bad idea to make my own holes in it?
2. This may be a part of #1, but it doesn't take long before it's digging into my shoulder. The bass hangs just low enough that it doesn't really connect with my body. Will moving it up beyond the waist line help?

Maybe take it to a boot-repairer (cobbler) - they should be able to shorten it for you and stitch it well if it needs cutting and put a neat new hole in where you want it.

That it's digging in suggests you might do better with a wider strap made from nice soft modern materials, there are threads here about comfy straps somewhere...

1. i did that to a strap once and it turned out a little sloppy but looks ok.

2. i'd ditch the strap and look for something more comfy that will go shorter. and bear in mind that no matter how high or low you wear it, a heavy bass is a heavy bass. a wider strap can help distribute the weight better, but it's still going to be heavy.
