newb technique question

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been at this less than a month. I've been playing fingerstyle, but my previous experience with banjo has my hand in a curl, rather than the long finger pure bass style.

What I'm hearing is on a quick pattern that moves from say E string to A string when I release the E string fret, I get a bit of a pull off on roundwound, but more than that I get an open E string ring that I don't want.
There's a lot of energy applied on the initial strike of the fretted e string and that continues once the fret is released.
I assume there's some kind of damping method I don't know about and need to learn (side of hand?) OR is the gain just turned up too high on my bass and I need to adjust the gain on the passive pickups vs. the volume of the amp? or ??? My bass has a lot of sustain.

I would do a search for the floating thumb technique here on TB, it works really well for muting strings below the one you are playing.

Good luck!

thanks
the adam nitti site is still up and the warwick link is gone, so it looks like I'll be moving ahead with teh adam nitti approach -- the idea of a consistent position is appealing
