Question Newbie to a 6-string bass.

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently got a 6 string Schecter Stiletto and coming from a 4 string and less than a year's experience, I'm a little lost. I'm not a bad player, not to brag but I have progressed a lot faster than most beginner bass players (I can play Pull Me Under by Dream Theater and a bunch of Maiden stuff ) on my 4 string, now how do I get proficient on the 6 string? I've been working on various Dream Theater songs for a couple of days now, but I feel like I won't be able to do them as well as I'd like without some skill-building practice and such.

In short, does anybody have any good songs to start with on a 6 string? Or any good exercises and such?
Also, what plucking method do you recommend? I.E. moving thumb from the pickup to other strings, or keeping it in place?
Lastly, any tips on silencing strings?

Thanks in advance

Just keep playing everything you know on the 6 string. I like to use the floating thumb technique. You can try learning some classical stuff (such as bach's cello suite prelude in g major) that uses the basses higher range a lot.
