Newbie Question

I'm sitting in for our bass on Monday. He left his bass guitar and amp, gave me a 30 minute lesson, and said good luck.

I play rhythm guitar, keyboard, banjo and clarinet so I kinda know my way around ..... repeat kinda.

We play classic country. Basic I IV V stuff. Here is what I plan on doing. Using this pattern:

Generic Major Scale
G------|------|------|------|
D--6---|------|--7---|------|
A--3---|--4---|------|--5---|
E------|--1---|------|--2---|

Song called out to be in the key of G, I plan on placing that pattern on the large E string 3rd fret and playing a 1-5 through out the song. As I understand it that is all I need to do, I do not have to move with the chord progression just use the 1-5 through the song.

Of course there is more, but, is what I've outlined above correct?

Thanks,

Malcolm

Well, your 1-5 is correct, but not moving with the changes confuses me. Do you mean it has been decided that you don't need to move with the progression?

you have to play the 1s and 5s of each chord as they change to have the song make sense. you can put the root either above or below the 5th to make some of the voice leading better. And throw some other scale degrees in there if you feel the need to do some more movement. just always (for now) land on the root of each chord.

Listen to Folsom Prison for some basic country bass line inspiration

OK - when the chord being played is C I play the C and G note. When the progression moves to F I play the F and C note. And then when the progression moves to G7 I would play the G and D note. OK can do........

Thanks,

Malcolm

Try to add the third to spice things a little bit more. But you've got things right so far
