Newbie questions on right hand technique

Sign in to disble this ad
Got a couple of questions.

Firstly I'm usually anchoring my thumb on either the top string (for access to the A, D and G strings) or the pickup (for the E or A strings). Is this OK, what's the usual technique used?

Secondly when plucking I try to use 2 fingers (should I use more than 2 fingers?) as much as possible, however I'm struggling. When trying to play the same string with the same left hand position in succession I end up using just the one finger, and if I try to use 2 I cannot get a regular rhythm. Is it just a matter of practice?

Any good exercises around for practicing?

Thanks

Yes, that technique is ok.

Regular practice over time will allow you to alternate your fingers with a regular rhythm. Try going through the major scales slowly with a metronome. TB member Jazzbo wrote this article which is very helpful.

The need for this may or may not arise as you progress.

Good luck!
