Wanted to share a site with the board. It's http://www.songsterr.com. Some you may have already heard of it or been there. Here's a little history: I'm a middle aged guy with absolutely no music experience of any kind. Definately not gifted and no artist. Smaller hands make bass playing a real challenge. Add poor memory and no former music experience. Was just about ready to retire the bass due to a HUGE learning curve until I found songsterr.

Been tinkering with the bass for a few months. Tried some private lessons (too slow for my taste), tried watching youtube videos and lessons, tried a few youtube private lessons (guys selling their online music classes), bought cd's and dvd's on ebay but nothing has helped my ZERO experience become something like songsterr.com. There's a free version but for myself the $10 bucks a month blows away everything else with huge results. I am not affiliated with that site.

There is no better tool for learning tabs, timing, rhythm, fingering, fretboard and improving speed. You can look ahead of the tabs while the music is playing to know where to place your fingers. The only thing this can't do is practice for you.

Seems to be geared towards (non-bass) guitarists?

There are tons of songs available for the bass. When the song starts go to the instrument dropdown and change to bass. Most songs have a bass option. There is nothing better for the value or learning tool that I've found. If somebody knows of another site or software, please post it. Also have the former midilogic software that has a lot more songs, but the way the tabs are displayed make it difficult to look ahead.

Yo OP,

Try Guitar Pro 5, it costs a lot, but you can download (torrent) it for free (which is what I did). It's AMAZING, you can download tabs from Ultimate Guitar, and in most cases the entire song is tabbed out with every instrument, whats more is that you can play out the song at different speeds. It pretty much revolutionised the way I learn bass.

That's cool thanks Paul262. I'm always looking for new software or something to help learn. I'm in the torrents all the time and will look this up.

I suspect that posts containing information about downloading torrents of for-sale software is probably frowned upon.
