So..I've already established that I'm not so great at using 3 fingers (I've stuck with two since I picked up a bass, just feels completely natural to me)..but..is it a major error to my technique if I just use my index finger to play very fast running sixteenth notes, such as the repeated E's in Tower of Power's "What is Hip?". I play it fine like that, I just feel like an idiot doing it. I can play quickly repeated notes with two fingers, but it just sounds stacatto and..not correct? (Not sure how else to put that)

well if you want to look at it from a technical way.... nothing is "incorrect" if that is how you play it, then power to you man.. Thats the great thing about this instrument, you can play it however you want to.

In the words of a bass teacher I don't remember:

If you like the sound your bass makes when you smash it in a wall, then you are playing it right. It might just be a little too expensive per song.

Meaning that however you play it, if you like the sound or if you play the song right then who the hell can complain? Thats why even though pick playing is a little frowned upon, there is no law against it.

So for the 3 fingers, it's up to you. I love it, it's free triplets for everyone! You just need to practice it, alot! Because three happens to be an odd number and if you're playing a riff with an even number of notes, it's going to mess you up. Why I do at this point is a hybrid between the 2. Don't go for perfect 3 fingers.

This is what I do.
---5---3---2---0---5---3---2---0
---R---M---I---R---R---M---I---R
Ring, Middle, Index

This is what Victor Wooten does:
---5---3---2---0---5---3---2---0
---R---M---I---R---M---I---R---M

Actually he might go 3-2-1-2-3 (fingers) but.. you get my point.

Edit: You know what's weird? My index used to by my main finger, like whenever I screwed up a pattern, the index would be the one who plucks twice in a row, now it's my ring finger.
Do the 3 fingers, it's awesome.

Jaco plucked with two fingers, Jamerson plucked with just one. Those two guys were pretty decent players, I think!
