Numbness in fingertips

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got done with rehearsal last night and noticed some numbness in the tip of my index finger on my fretting hand. Didn't think too much about ir but it is still there today.

I've been playing for 27-28 some odd years and I am not a one string, one finger player, I use all of them. I've never had this happen before.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Licensed and experienced massage therapist here.... All nerves that innervate your fingers run through the carpal tunnel. I am guessing that your carpal tunnel is entrapping the nerves a bit and causing the problem. Here is what I'd do... Get a massage or do it yourself. They, or you, should specifically work the shoulder all the way down to the hand of the problematic side. Make sure they or you spend time on the carpal tunnel itself, stretching it out, etc. Our bodies are synergistic, so the problem could actually be starting all the way up your arm or on the shoulder. PM me if you wish.
Cheers,
G.

I have been having the same problem in my ring finger and pinky for well over a month now..The Doc says he thinks it is a pinched nerve in my elbow caused by my tendency to lean on my elbow while I'm on the computer or watching TV etc..I really didn't realize that I was doing that..I have made a conscious effort to quit and it has helped a little..
Pay attention to what you are doing with your hands/arms even when you aren't playing the bass. You may be doing something subconsciously like I have been doing that is not related to playing at all.

Good advice Blake Bass. You could also benefit from what I recommended to the OP.

Big THANKS

I do lean on my elbow at the computer. Being a sign shop owner / graphic artist I am at the computer all the time.

I also did notice my strap seemed to be cutting into my shoulder last night (3" wide padded Levy's) and I'm not playing a heavy bass at all. Maybe time to make a few changes.

Thanks again.
