| Off-Track Tendon

I'm not sure when or how it happened - it was at least ten years ago, right before I took a long hiatus from gigging. The tendon in my left-hand middle finger tore its way out of the track. When I bend that finger all the way down, the tendon slips off the knuckle. As a side effect, my ring finger cracks nearly every time I bend it.
I saw a hand specialist about it several years ago, and he said he could operate on it by doing a tendon graft to recreate the track for the tendon, but that chances were that I'd lose just as much motion as I gained. I decided to pass since I'm not that crazy a player and so far it only slows me down a little.
I just have a foreboding sense that this is a bit of ticking time bomb. He said that eventually the tendon could start slipping further, to the point where it will sometimes get locked below the finger, and at that point I can talk to him again about operating.
Has anybody else encountered this type of problem? Were there any techniques you used to compensate for it? |
