I've been playing more and more with a pick recently. Always played fingerstyle til recently, but the pick just opens up some different dynamics. Tis all cool.

Dunlop tortex: Blue 1mm ? Purple 1.14mm

Pick all the way - play finger style for reggae and other slowish sound stuff, but for punk or fast walks, pick with mids scooped!!!!!

Dunlops 1mm, or Brain 1mm - need the grip

I like the sound of both. For me playing with a pick is all about the sound you get. I started playing with a pick but i've recently tried playing with fingers and its good, but you don't get a tone as rich as with a pick and it sounds a lot softer with fingers. I would recoment if your playing a punky/fast bassline with a lot of notes then use a pick because it sounds terrible with fingers unless your extriemely accurate even then it doesn't have the same sound.

I play both ways. A lot of people on here won't admit to using a pick. I dont know why that is. It doesn't make you any less of a player, and definately contributes to your skills as a musician and songwriter.

The bassists that look down on pick players probably also use Macs and look down on Windows users. Elitism follows many different subjects.

(And I use Linux and look down on Mac users, but also use a pick... shocking!)

Funny thing is when I started playing bass, coming from drums, I wanted to learn slap more than anything. I even slapped in my first few jams, keeping time with the drummer. I still slap, but now that I've been playing a few years I've developed a love for pick playing. I still use my fingers, but pick playing just makes certain tones and if you do it on a P-bass it just sounds amazing. The best way to rock out.

I like the big Fender triangle picks and am going to order some D'Andreas. Heavy of course.

Fingers for 80% of bass part work.

Pick for 20% of bass part work.

Melodic part work with synth and lead parts I tend to do with a pick (I use Dunlop 3mm Stubby as I do a bit of sweeping and Demiola style speed picking) as the synth needs a very clean attack and the lead parts are usually upper register on my seven so I am deliberately doing a guitar imitation sort of.

More traditional bass soloing (particularly funk and Jazz) are almost always finger style with a little slap, thump whatever you want to call it.

Personally, like many who have already posted, I believe in the mission not the equipment or the technology employed to get there. If a pick is the best choice so be it.

I always was taught that a good musician was one who was at very least aware of the strengths and applications of all techniques. Can't see why even the most hard core theoretical musician would be any other way.

How about a Sub-Group for Bassists that used to be too stuck up to play with a pick??? J/K

I have kept the green Tortex (.75mm, I think) around for years, but I used them only when I was tired.

I am actually beginning to like them, and I have been using them more and more lately.

Of course, I still feel alot of guilt and shame......................... because of my pick use..................., but Dangit, it is getting the tone I want, and for certain mechanical lines (droning 8ths & 16ths), it is working out pretty well.

And besides, these days, most of the haters don't gig anymore, because the weren't able to keep a career going for 30 years, so the only people I have to worry about are, well, I guess I don't really need to worry, do I?

OK - so there, I said it. I play with a pick..................... sometimes.................. but not too much, you know, only when it's appropriate...................... and I could stop if I wanted to.

I'd like a number, please. I am PROUD to come out of the closet. I want the WHOLE WORLD TO KNOW!

Wow, I feel better!

Just hook me up with a number and I'll go away!

I play with a pick half the time now. Either my trusty worn yellow pick (no names are even on it), or a Dunlop .71 mm...IN PINK! I like the using the pick becuase it gives me a much sharper, faster tone. It's important to know both.

Haha well I never cared what a bunch of "intelligent" non-musician people on youtube have to say.
