Both the bassists for Metallica were/are great. The first time I ever saw Cliff doing a solo on stage in some clip it just blew me away. I was like OMG!!!! He was doing what I always wanted to do on a bass and did to a point. I was always let go from bands or walked away because I could never find any others that could deal with that on a bass. I seen/heard him and was like 'HAH it CAN BE DONE.' And its wasn't like I expected to center stage all the time, I was happy to be in the background but it seemed all the people wanted that Id hook up with were the simple doo dee doo *yawn* bass lines so the guitarist could 'shine'...yea...neexxt....

The tab book I have is a Legendary Bass Licks book. It has some hits from all their stuff up through Reload and it came with a CD. Interesting CD...the cover is a great. It has a pic of Cliff on stage and a pic of Jason on stage. Both are jamming and both are sporting great 'Bass Face' LOL In Jason's pic he is seriously bending the E and D strings -- killer looking pic.

And now I'm off to go get my Squier VMG out of layway....FINALLY!!!

Oh and yea, once we get Sandman down, I will probably sit back one night unplugged just plinking around and 'expand' on it.

And I am not familiar with Testament but for heavier bands I am an In Flames fan and have several of their CDs. That bassist has some great licks I think. I also think the bassist for Disturbed totally rocks and I have all their stuff.

Either this month or last month's issue of Guitar World magazine (Yngwie Malmsteen on cover) transcribes Testament's "Practice What You Preach". Guitar World transcribes the bass lines too. I LOVE that they do that!

Its a great song if you like old school thrash metal. Check it out!

For fun/difficulty of playing stick with Metallica's first three albums, Cliff was brilliant. As others here have noted, Enter Sandman really comes alive when played full band. The bass line by itself is nothing special. Cliff Burton's bass lines range from easy(For Whom the Bell Tolls) to extremely difficult(Anasthesia, The Call of Ktulu), and everything in between. Have fun!

FWTBTs is easy but way fun, especially that opening lick..booyah...

And I now officially own a Squier VMJ *looks over at it leaning against the Dynabass*...the first and only 'new' bass Ive ever owned (not counting the new one my grandfather bought me *first bass*...I wasnt there and had no say in what he picked so I dont think that counts LOL).... the one I got was one of the killer ones ^_^ as in the neck is sweet, no noise with the electronics...good construction... of course thats the one I will practice on tonight when my guitarist comes over. ^_^

You could, but be very careful.

Also, Cliff Burton is a guitarist on four strings. Newstead is a bassist. Hence the difference in songs. Burton makes you say 'Wow' on things like Battery; Newstead makes me bob my head on songs like 'The God That Failed'. I perfer Newstead.
