At 4:52, what the hell is he doing? I mean the "diggity-dig" percussive snapping, how does he do that so fast?

Sounds like triplets., more percussion type thing. Thumb {slap} pluck {pop} thumb and choking the neck {holding the fingers on the strings to mute them.

Okay, the problem with just saying "he practices" in reply is that I'm asking what it is that he's doing--what is it he's practicing.

This may not be it, but it sure looks/sounds similar:

Les claypool can just slap inhumanly fast, from what I gather. It looks like: Pop-slap-slap-pop-slap-slap.

One way to mimick this is to pop with two fingers and slap once, so with your middle and index fingers you pop, and then you slap with your thumb once, like pop-pop-slap-pop-pop-slap.

Or you could use your fret hand to percussively slap while muting with your thumb and index finger and slapping with your pinkie, ring, and middle fingers, like the bass line for Laquerhead.

Sounds like your basic choked off banjo roll to me.

Thumb slap, pop the first and second fingers.

Ed Friedlands Slap DVD has a great example of the technique.

I use it in Daytona for Bike week as my, "Hey, wanna hear my imitation of a Harley Davidson?" lick.

it's just pop-slap-slap-pop-slap-slap
creating fast triplets.
Les and Flea are two notable players who use this style of triplet slap style.

Ed calls it the "funk peel-off" as described above. He illustrates it very well in his slap DVD (which I recommend). You can use it for triplets or rolls of 4.

You could use a roll, but it sounds more like a pop and two slaps as mentioned above. I may be wrong but it definitely sounds to me like a high note followed by two low ones.

Cheers,
Alun

I worked on a few of his tracks in short with my bass instructor and he said he's slap-pop-slapping. Sometimes he double pops, but he's not using the double thumping technique that Wooten is on about.

I've found it to be easier to just hit the string twice rather than down up, just personal preference.
