Old dog learns a new trick.

Old dogs can most certainly learn new tricks! Went to see my old band the other night and was impressed with their current bassist,they do a mix of rock,funk,disco and pop from the last 4 decades.I watched as she pounded out the bass lines to the songs i used to play with them. I wouldnt say she is necessarily more solid but she is definitly more versatile! She played the songs like they were meant to be played whether using a pick,fingers or slapping and popping.Ive been told that I am a solid player but I keep it simple.She has to miss a show with them in march and asked if I would fill in. After watching her I decided that I am going to force myself to learn to slap and pop and really want to have it down for the show. I have been focusing on it for the last 2 weeks and am very happy with my progress. I started slow and forced myself to practice as much as possible, frustrating at first but kept pounding away.I finally started getting the hang of it and am getting faster ,I am going to be able to do this!This has reignited my passion for playing!I look forward to locking myself in my mancave and practicing every night(kinda feel like i did when I was 15 and learned smoke on the water on guitar). It is easy to fall into ruts in playing( in life in general!) and use age as excuse not to learn ( I am 41).sometimes you are inspired by someone,something clicks and you suprise yourself! anyway just wanted to share,especially with those old dogs who dont think they can learn a new trick,dont believe it!

Don't fret, I'm older than you. Its a different game. i go on Youtube and watch all the slappers etc and I know how to play this style but its not my regular style. Hey Jeff Beck has a female bass player( real great at that) ......Good for the show.........

How do you play if you "dont fret"?.....Im sorry, that was bad! seriously Im not fretting,Im excited about learning something new to me and becoming a better player!

Took up banjo in 2000 at age 65 when I retired.
Joined a band the next year. We are still playing together.
Added rhythm guitar at 67.
Took on keyboard at 72.
Clarinet at 73
Traded in the banjo for a Bass at 74.
Added another band - play bass in this one.

Somewhere in the middle of all that passed my ham radio technician and general license exams and put together a ham rig. KE5HZI

Old dogs and new tricks - yep, keeps a fellow alive. Sitting still rust develops. Those Harleys look like fun, may be one in my future, a side car for the Wife might work... probably have to get a tattoo, Na, no way forget the Harley.
