Well, I play mostly Rock and never use a pick. I was a guitar player first, and aviod a pick like the plague becuase I don't want to depend on it being so used to it.
I got some DVDs, thought I was doing OK, but, It really took a teacher (an experience bassist will do) to watch me and correct the bad habits I didn't even know I was doing.
Also, how do you want to do it? Anchor on the Pickup, anchor on the strings (except the E or B) or leave your thumb free which is what I think is best but can't do well.
I anchor on the PU for the B (or E) and anchor on the strings to go higher. Keep your nails cliped, that will effect your tone. Keep your elbow tucked in. Practice even pressure w/ your index and middle finger. From the sound you souldn't be able to tell one is stronger than the other.
That will do you as much good as a DVD.
