I have just started playing the guitar again after many years off and wasn't good even back then. Picked up a Epiphone viola and got some D'addario picccolo strings to screw around with. I wanted to tune to a sort of open g (don't ask me why), looked around and some folks said to tune the e to g instead of d as d is a pain in the ass. Since the piccolos are tuned like a regular guitar I was going to do GGDG (standard is EADG for the piccolos I believe). Anyway go to the second G, kept tightening and BAMMM went the brand new string. what can I do? Thanks in advance. Gary the Geek
You went from a string meant for an A "UP" to the G??!! Almost an octave??!! I can see why it'd snap.
Not to mention the tension on the neck.
I must be missing something.

@Foamy...told you I was a newbie....that's exactly what I did...I think what you said sounds right and no you didn't miss anything. Anyway started all over and went to the 'lower g' and all is as well as it can get tonight...thanks for your comment and you're welcome for the comedic interlude...LOL
