Out of tune when tapping?

ive noticed that whenever i tap with my right hand, it sounds out of tune. i thought it was my intonation, but i checked that and everything seems fine.

would this be a truss rod adjustment or am i just not tapping properly?

Are you playing through an amp? If you're just doing it acoustically, you're hearing a combination of the intended note and the unintended note that is produced between the fret behind the one you're aiming at and the nut. If you have some kind of peizo pickup on your bass, that might be picking up both notes through the body.
