I finger-play with a Geddy Jbass and already have the pickups set low (as low as it comes stock) but I find myself constantly digging into the poles and getting that annoying, loud magnetic pop that can often make an amp clip.
Should I just stop using basses with open pole-pieces, admit that I have a poor techique (although it is the only style that gets the sound that I like), or lower the pups.
(If lowering the pups will help, how low is too low?)

I found that putting electrical tape over the pole pieces reduces the pop a lot. That's a quick and dirty fix, you could try that with little to no effort to see if it works for you.

+1

Except I used to use gaffa tape. Maybe even a couple of layers.

Wow, that's pretty ingenius. I wonder why that didn't occurr to me. I'll give it a try. Who says that your bass has to look pretty, hust so long as you're good enough to justify it.
Thanks.

As most pickups have black coverss, if you use gaffa tape you can carefully trim it so it's fairly neat.

Yeah, I actually had gaffa tape lying in the garage and put down a couple layers and it really fixed those pops. I just trimmed the edges, and with the clean edges on top of the white pick-guard it just looks like I've got one single coil in the bridge and a soapbar/emg in the neck pu spot. Kinda cool look'n actually.
Thanks again for the tape solution.
