Overtones

This may be hard to explain "on paper" vs a "live lesson." I have trouble with notes "ringing" like an overtone. If I play very stacatto, I'm fine. But when playing eighth notes, for example, I hear ringing overtones like crazy. And for some reason, it's worse on my G string and/or if I'm using a pic. Any advice would be appreciated.

You have to mute in two different places on the string. Muting with both hands does it.

In my experience, playing bass is a lot about muting. You have to know when to mute and in what way. You can mute by just lifting your finger of the fret, you can mute with other fingers from your left hand or you can mute with your right hand fingers. Often a combination is in order to succesfully mute overtones.
