Pain in my plucking hand, ring finger...anyone else??

hey y'all

I've played guitar for about 5 years, and I just started playing bass(this might have something to do with it...)

I have a slight pain in the knuckle where my ring finger meets the palm when I pluck a string with my middle finger. is this a technique problem? i rest my thumb on the pick up for pretty much everything I play, I know everyone says "use the floating thumb" but I can't seem to get the hang of it... it really feels horrible to me

That sounds wierd. Have you ever had any injuries to it? Having your ring finger hurt when you move your middle shouldn't happen.

You are having some ligamant or tendon pain. Just like if you started jogging or doing situps you would have some pain for a while.

It should go away BUT you may want to cut back on practice time a LITTLE....and stretch and warm up before playing t your advanced jazz licks...LOL!

A "training ache" is okay and can be expected with unfamiliar movements. However, if there is pain in a finger joint and swelling then you are probably doing something wrong technique wise. If you continue playing through the pain it could develop into RSI.

that does sound pretty weird. i remember some years ago when i first started learning the old three finger approach(index, middle, ring alternation) because i wasnt used to the movements my pinky finger(the only one i dont use) hurt in that some spot, but wasnt too bad and only last about 2 weeks. maybe it will sort itself out. try hand stretches before your play. look on www.bassguitar.com and they have some ideas there, if not im sure theres tons on this board.

I have a similar problem that came from an injery in my hand (boxing)

mine will likely never go away I play through the pain (it's really more of a uncomfertable thing)
