Pain under the fingernail

Sign in to disble this ad
I can take the blisters, I can even take the bleeding. What I really hate more than anything though is this pain I get under the tip of the fingernail. Unlike blisters, which can still allow me to continue playing, the pain and tenderness right under the fingernail prevents me from playing. I've been playing bass for two years now, and it still happens. Is it normal? Does it take longer to pass than the blisters?

I have noticed it happens after I cut my fingernails. But I love keeping them nice and short. but if it's been happening to you for 8 years I guess it's some more pain I'll have to endure.

Cutting your nails too short is surprisingly painful. Try cutting and then filing to desired length.

I've had this same problem, I figured it was because I'm still new, but the pain didn't seem to be going down with the amount of time I'm putting in. I'll try filing my nails next time to see if that helps, thanks for the advice.

Looks like another blank spot in my health pages (link below). I'm always trying to collect info on matters like this, since I would like to see my health pages to cover all possible issues.
I would appreciate posts or PM's.

Drewsky: blisters, bleeding? How and when?

Nails:
- just left hand, or right hand also?
- same on all fingers, or differences?
- If you cut them after play, will you still have trouble the next day?
- Do you press the strings with the fingertips or with the pads?

i've never encountered any pain under the fingernail. the only way i can think it would happen is if you're fretting with too much force/at an odd angle and pulling the skin away from the nails, or if you cut your nails too short.

could you elaborate a little bit?

That used to happen to me when I chewed my fingernails.
