Unhappy Palm Muting problems

So i was playing some fast stuff today, and suddenly i played the guitar intro to through the fire and flames (dragonforce) but then my palm started to hurt, i looked at it and my veins were like swollen up, i never had this before (i was using a pick ATM), so what should i do?? im not gonna wear a piece of cloth like kirk hammet does, any help?

Look to the height of your bass...depending upon how you wear your bass, you can strain you wrist, causing pain. Because of the way you need to bend your wrist to palm mute effectively, it's much easier to give yourself trouble.
