Patwank

I an auditioning for a band and they want me to play a part that has this kind of patwank sound like the strings are rattling. You know like the start of Seinfield but with a bass rather than a keyboard. How do I do that? I can't get that sound out of my bass. I have tried pulling on them and letting them snap which is slow and not really that great. I have tried a felt pick (I have not tried a plastic one). Do I need to loosen the strings and play lower with less tension? Does anyone have any suggestions?

also, i think the seinfeld bass sound involves an octaver effect.

Not sure... but I always thought and assumed the Seinfeld bassline was played on a keyboard using a slap bass sound.

Do-able on a real bass, but most likely just a keyboardist.

Could you show us a recording of what you're talking about?

+1. That was a EMU Emulator III sampler.

Ya, definitely not a real bass in review. Again... very do-able as slap, just not how it was recorded. The recording is a keyboardist pretending to be a bass player.

And a quick stroll through youtube shows a slew of very badly played versions with poor sounds to go along with the performances. :-)

No, you'll just lose your high end. Newish strings will help. My opinion is that it's best not to worry about creating a specific slap bass sound too closely, especially if it's a synth and not a bass at all. I'm not telling you not to try at all, but think "ballpark" or you'll go nuts.
