Percussive Slap Sound

I really struggle to get that percussive sound of the dead notes when I slap and pop especially when playing fast. Has anyone got any tips on how to get this sound or is it all down to practice?

Hi!
I had the same problem and I couldn't figure out what was wrong.
Well, nothing was "wrong". I asked my teacher how could I get more percussive and he suggested slapping closer to the fingerboard, which seems to have helped

Try working on the muting aspect of it, as well. Control over the decay is the other half of what make the sound percussive.
