pick or fingers - "Sympathy for the Devil" ??

Sign in to disble this ad
I am not trying to re-start the whole "pick vs fingers" discussion. Specific song question for those who play it:

When you play the Stones' Sympathy for the Devil, do you use a pick or not? And, have you tried it both ways?

Thanks.

I believe Bill Wyman used a pick for this song. I may be wrong....but thats nearly impossible!

well if your looking to be exactly like the recording use a pick. Im also pretty sure he uses a pick in that recording. Tell you the truth its the tone and sound you are going for if your playing this song with a band. I have to say I never learned this song so Ive never tried it but mess around if it.

Never thought about it. I never use a pick on that song, but I rarely use a pick.

Same here.
That one showed up on the "learn list" after it got requested and played(we do that). Neck pickup, warm SVT-tweaked patch in POD XTLive, & Bill's unique feel/timing(follows drums).

I've heard somewhere that Keith played bass on the recording. Yeah from wikipedia... Richards plays bass on the original recording, and also the song's electric-guitar solo. And it sounds like a pick to me..... with flats.

Keith played bass on the recording using a pick, also does Bill playing it live.
I used to play in a Stones tribute band and have played it either fingerstyle or with a pick
