Pick sounding like slap

In this clip in '99 by Jason Newsted, about :45 into it he's using a pick but it sounds like slapping. Is it just him hitting the strings really hard or is there more to it?

Thanks

You can achieve a sound similar to slap by picking very hard, a bit past the end of the fretboard. The space between the fretboard and P pickup/neck J pickup seems best for it. Work on it and you'll be able to adjust your technique till it sounds the way you want it to.

What I like to do is make a slap sound like a pick.

I don't know what the deal with that is...pretty cool though. Maybe something to do with Sadowsky as well?

He can slap, and he gets that clangy sound by not only playing with a pick but also his low action on his bass.

its quite simple,PUNISH THOSE STRINGS (muhahahaha)
the closer the strings are to the pickup, the easier it is to make it sound "slappy"
