I use both fingers and pick, but I think that playing with the fingers give you better control over the timbre of the strings!

It depends what sound I'm after, what music I'm playing, and what mood I'm in. Sometimes I like playing with a pick because I feel the rhythm more by getting my whole arm into it. Sometimes I want to lay back and play fingerstyle. Sometimes I want to pound the crap out of my strings (great stress reliever) so I'll use a pick if I want to hammer on it, or my fingers if I feel like slapping the sh*t out of my bass. sometimes I just want to feel the strings and be more in touch with the bass in kind of an organic way...and other times I want it to be more metallic and distance myself from the bass itself and just feel as part of the whole rhythm section, so I'll use a pick.

Hard to say really. I like using both...sometimes at the same time (plucking with a pick, but picking up octave notes with a finger).

Why do you ask?

Broken knuckle.

So I pick.

Unless Doom-ish stuff. Then I may, may, finger.

Oh man, I don't even post here very often and I know this has to have been absolutely done to death.

When I first started, I thought "real bassists use their fingers" so I just learned that way and got comfortable. I usually don't bother to mess with picks unless I'm looking for some chunk or attack. You do get some sweet tones with a pick.
