pick technique and droning strings

Sign in to disble this ad
one of the reasons i could never really figure out guitar, and favour fingerstyle so much is that when i use a pick, the strings tend to drone and it sounds very messy

lately, i've been trying to get back into working on my pick technique, but im kinda stuck

how should i be muting strings not being played?

are you working on your pick technique on guitar or bass?

on guitar, a lot of the muting is done with the fretting hand. Namely, the palm of the hand and the fingers not in use. There's also some muting down with the palm of the picking hand.

On bass, I mostly use my fretting hand, since I sometimes feel like I'm choking the strings if I use my picking hand.

It's a case-by-case thing. Depends on the part. If the part is more scalar, palm-muting is the call. If it's a more "rhythm guitar" style part - double-stops, string crossings, etc... the left hand is on heavy muting duty. But developing muting skills at both ends is what you need to do to control those unwanted ringers.

with fingerstyle i mute higher strings with the left hand and lower ones with the right. so i should try taking a similar approach in my picking?
