I am new to playing bass. Converted from guitar. I use a pick while playing. I am comfortable playing with a pick, however, I haven't found a pick I really like. I would appreciate anyone's opinion on a selection of picks to use. Thanks. BF

I usually like the free ones that I found at the end of my phalanges...

Dunlop Tortex seem to work well, there's another one out there called GatorBacks, or something like that, that is very similar. I've tried felt picks as well, I just can't get used to playing with picks. The only player I really like that uses a pick is Steve Swallow.

Also, if you like a very stiff, unyielding pick, try out those Min'd Picks, they're made of granite, I think...

On bass, the thicker the better. Medium and light picks will eventually damage your hands if you do it long enough. Might take 25 years like it did me, but it'll happen.

Dunlop 1.5mm. Gotta see those 2mm picks. Had to scrape my 1.5 yesterday because it kept slipping away.

Yeah, thicker the better. Unfortunately these 1.5mm don't fit under my pickguard.

fender heavy guitar picks for me
I've tried using actually bass picks(the triangles with curved edges) and they're just too wide

>>> Not if you have a light touch. I've found the Clayton .80mm's to be the perfect guage between the Dunlop yellow .63's and the green .88's, but I started out as a guitar player, so maybe that has something to do with it; I've been playing just shy of 30 years with no hand problems whatsoever.

Clayton .80, .63, 1mm
Dunlop Tortex .88, .60, .50 mm
COOL with a textured grip area in Heavy (1 mm) and Thin (.60). Those are the picks I use.

I use a Jim Dunlop Big Stubby 3.0 mm. It has a dimple on either side so you can keep a good grip on it. Because it never flexes, I always know where the tip of the pick is, and you can play faster with less motion.

I remember when I first started playing bass i used a pick... it was a clayton 80mm. but, as i remember it was the larger sharp triangle shape... they always wore well and never broke.

I use Everly Star Grip picks....the purple ones that are 1.14MM. I like them alot. If you're like me and sweat like a mad man when playing, these picks don't slip out between your fingers. Here they are:

For some reason you might want to try to pursue the finger style.

I too, at first, required a pick.

But then I locked all my picks in a box and gave the key to my parents and told them not to let me have the picks.

That worked, and I still find it hard to use picks on a bass.
