Question Picking hand pain.

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been getting this pain in my right hand every time I go for too fast for too long, and the muscle or something between my pointer finger and thumb swells up some and hurts, and really makes it hard to finish whatever song I'm doing with fast, demanding picking (I.E. Killers by Maiden). I don't use a pick, only my fingers. Any ideas on how to lessen this, or if it's muscle pain, how to make it stronger so it doesn't happen anymore? I just wanna play this song, and this is the only thing getting in my way >_>

I've been playing bass for about 10 years, and as I've aged, I also have experienced some pain in that exact area. I've been to doctors, without any progress. Then I went to a physical therapist. All I can say is go to a physical therapist. They are muscle and joint geniuses. A Dr. is really more of an internalist, from what I've seen. Get an X ray first to rule out a newly formed hairline fracture before going through PT.

EDIT: Give a thumbs up, look at the back of your thumb, locate the two stiff tendons going toward your wrist. Tendinitis in those tendons is what I had to give me that pinching, inflamed feeling between thumb and forefinger.

hey guys, as a response I got a PM about some guy who did hand exercises, I don't feel like checking the exact name but they're tricky and would definitely help if i really stuck to them. But I found the pain went away with practice, that's all it took. I can now play Killers with very little pain, just gotta practice working up stamina and that's all that was needed in my case.

Why I keep hammering the Carol Kaye pick method

I used to have the same problem until I switched to the floating thumb technique a few years ago. My pain is now gone!

played with pick for years,,, hardcore punk litterly as fast as I could go to keep up and litterly dug holes in my bass.. but what I have found is this.. you'll have those parts where you have to really dig in and play fast and then you must have some parts you use as a relax or rest and when you come to those you ease up on the tension your holding the pick,,,, seriously it will feel like its ready to fall but you must do this to let blood back into the muscles in your hand..

also you can achieve a decent rest by barely hitting the strings with the tip of the pic, or switching to your middle finger and then going back with your pointer when the harder part comes back.

this is what works for me..
