Question Picks - What kind works best for you?

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, please NO discussion of to pick or not to pick, that has nothing to do with the point of my thread.

I DO use a pick most of the time. I usually use Clayton 1.04 or 1.13's. I'm wondering though if anyone has any suggestions as to something that might "work" better. I've read some of you here talking about 3.0's but I've never seen that personally.

I welcome your suggestions!

.80 - 1.00 depending on type. Use to use .72 ceramic pics but can't find them locally any more.

I like dunlop delrin .71 - it's pink. Doesn't break, slow to wear out with the right amount of snap.

I can't stand super heavy picks.

When I use picks I got with Dunlop Tortex .73mm's. I like the flex they provide.. not a fan of really stiff pics.

I have standardised on Dunlop 1mm, the black nylon ones. I use those for bass (when I use a pick), guitar, and resonator slide (when I don't use fingers).

Not too stiff, but stiff enough to provide some real attack when I want it. I tried all sorts, 2mm were way too thick with not enough flex in them. The Fender Tortex (I think) ones I could wreck in a couple of songs on bass but the 1mm Dunlop feel just right for me and last really well.

Lame.

I generally use a small pick that just fits between my thumb and finger at about 1.2mm thick. Though I usually prefer to use my fingers.

+2 for Gators. I've experimented a bit and prefer either the purple .96 or blue 1.14's, depending on my mood. Lighter or heavier than those doesn't work for me.

Either Jim Dunlop Tortex Sharp 1.5mm, or Clayton USA 1.9mm for me, they both feel right, depending on what im playing.

I use .60 of these... I also do not like really stiff picks... I find these to sufficiently cut the mustard...

I have been using these forever. Usually I take a razor blade and put "grip" stripes on them. This thickness has just enough give for my tastes and gives my pick tone some grind.

Ultex Jazz 3's or Clayton Ultem. Sometimes a big stubby, but the ends are too round and it doesn't "bite" very well.

Looks like I'm in the minority so far but I love thicker picks. My favorites are the Big Stubbies 2.0mm, though I have tried and also kind of like the 3.0mm. I like the 2.0's best, though.

I also like the sound of a brand new felt pick, which is also pretty thick. But once you use them a little and they begin to compact I like them less (both the sound and the feel).

Thanks guys. This is all very helpful.

Heres what I'm currently using now in the 1.07...

I used to use the Tortex when I played guitar more, but I didn't like them with the bass for some reason. I guess I just like the bigger pick so maybe I'll try the big Tortex out. I'm also gonna see how the Big Stubbies work.
