There are 17 separate stitches. Usually when they are super tight it means theres still some swelling there. Best time to do it is when you first get up (assuming you've slept with the hand elevated). Sometimes the easiest way to do it is cut directly through the knot.
I thought I'd jump in here I find that removing stitches are easiest after a hot shower. Your skin is more pliable when everything's nice and steamy. I did that for my appendicectomy stitches when I kept forgetting to go for my dressing replacements :/
