Playing drums AND bass simultaneously?

How is this for a crazy idea?

My thought is to sit down and the drum kit and play the kick drum and high hat while I play bass.

Should I be committed?

There are a couple local bands around here that do that sort of thing. Both of the ones I'm thinking of do it with guitar and drums at once, but the principal is the same. One of them has a high hat and a snare operated by the same pedal. It's a cool idea, especially if you can do it well.

Look at The Avett Brothers. One plays banjo/kick drum, and one plays guitar/hi hat. It's do-able.

A friend of mine plays harmonica/accordion and accompanies himself with assorted percussion at the same time. You can check him out here.

I do it too sometimes when the drummer doesn't show. It really irritates the rest of the band.

It probably doesn't help that I'm not very good at it.

I saw Levon Helm open the show with the Band doing Milk Cow Blues; he was playing mandolin, singing and playing drum set.

check out 'that 1 guy'

he made his own instrument - kind of like a metal pipe version of... well it's crazy, and involves him playing bass and drums at the same time

By the looks of it, there are all sorts of ways you could utilize this.

We were playing a gospel-esque version of I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free. I had kick/snare/hats set up, playing those (with brushes) during the head + trumpet solo/melody, and then went to chords with the kick/hats for a piano solo, and then continued the kick/hats during a bass solo.

I'm sure you could rig up some interesting stuff on an electric set if that's your thing, also.
