Playing A Fender American Premier Deluxe

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got my Fender American Premier Bass and am wondering which is the best place to rest my thumb.I've been alternating between the small front pickup and the large rear one-quite a different sound. Also, when plucking the strings with any force, I seem to be getting a lot of fret noise. My Warwick was very forgiving and I didn't have to be so careful about muting the strings. Anybody else find it difficult making the transition from a Warwick to a Fender?

Just out of curiosity, does it have a maple fingerboard? When I was shopping for a Fender, the maple fingerboards I tried seemed to fit your description. Perhaps because they are harder -- I don't know. They seemed more sensitive to fretting and hammer-ons. That could be a good thing but, if you're not used to it, it could take some time to adjust.

Thumb position? I'll defer that question to the experts but my non-expert opinion is that this is a personal preference. And the answer will depend upon what you are playing. Sometimes I rest it on the pickup (where your front pickup is); sometimes I rest it on the E string for muting; sometimes I use a floating thumb to mute the top strings. Experiment to see what works for you.
