Playing leftie

I am just wondering what people make of people playing bass left-handed. I play leftie myself and yet have faced some criticism for doing so.

Opinions and comments please!

Each to his own, but you're bent over a barrel as far as buying basses goes.

I haven't had a problem in locating leftie basses yet.....most models have leftie options now, and most custom jobs are also.

Left-handed, right-handed, play with you feet for all I care. Why should it make a difference?

I've only encountered criticism for playing left handed on internet forums. Never in an actual band/playing situation.

In most places competent bassplayers are hard to come by. If you've got the skills nobody is going to care which way you wear the instrument!

ever see that one man who has to play guitar with his feet because he was born without arms?

watching him was part of the reason why I quit guitar

Not that I know of, but that reminds me of a guy I saw in Balboa Park in San Diego who was playing guitar with his feet 'cause he had no arms, and pretty well I might add! I wonder if it's the same guy...?

I'm a lefty for everything but bass. I decided to learn bass properly and I don't regret it at all. IMHO, I think that lefty bass players made a big mistake when they first started out.

well there's no reason it wouldn't. I mean, how many people are born without arms and have the motivation to hold a pick with their toes?

heck, sometimes I use a thumb-pick just so i don't have to worry about it slipping

really? wow, I never knew. Any particular reasons?

this reminds me of the time I told my music history teacher, that left handed pianos were available....you wouldn't believe me when I said that

long story short, everyone said I was crazy, even when I showed them the website

if you have a left-handed bassist on the right side of the stage, and a right-handed guitarist on the left side of the stage, the stage looks bigger to the audience.

speaking in terms of this particular psychological phenomenon, it behooves a band to seek out a lefty player.

Left handed playing is just a new facet to my ability, since I learned to play right handed even though I'm left handed. It was a little tough at first, but I retaught myself to play leftie on my Jimi Hendrix-style fretless yamaha

I'm a lefty, play righty. I wouldn't have minded starting out with a lefty, because I've had rather much problems with my right hand endurance. Never had any problems like that with my left hand. I find more advanced right-hand techniques to be extremely hard to learn, I simply don't have the same coordination and speed in my right hand as my left hand. It's a physical limitation that I can't do anything about. Practicing makes it better of course, but it's still there. My left hand will always be my stronger and faster hand. No question about it.

I'm a lefty. We always had to adapt to a society built for the righties. Writing, using a mouse, and even driving a standard, we had to approach differently. The availability of basses could be viewed as a down fall, but when it comes down to it I spent more time on my technique to alter the tone then switching basses. Sometimes it seems, having alot of choices complicates matters. I learned how to play bass right handed when I first started for several reasons. One of those reasons were to fit in. I could not get my right hand up to par. Switching to left hand was one of the best things I ever did. I can express myself more freely now. I realized it was more about the music then appearance. I fit in much better with the big dogs then I ever did playing right handed.

Leftys can play right handed basses. And I'm going to get me a lefty bass and play it right handed. I think upside down guitars look cool.
