Playing on the very edge of the fingerboard on a fretless

On most fretless bass guitars, there is enough fingerboard beyond the two-octave mark to play an additional half-step. On my double bass the very edge of the fingerboard is scraped up from playing up there. The fingerboard on my double bass is maple (it isn't exactly a high end double bass), as opposed to by fretless bass guitar which has an ebony fingerboard. I am wondering how likely it is that an ebony fingerboard will be damaged if I use the extra space as a 25th "fret".

It can happen, but it'll take years and years, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ebony is very hard and strong, but it can chip or crack. BTW, fingerboards can be replaced.
