well , since i originally posted this topic , i have began playing with my thumb and my first 2 fingers ,
only been playing just over a week and coming on great , using all four ringers to fret , with quite a bit emphasis on pinky , doing runs all the way over the fret , on each string , and just getting a grasp off where the notes are and how they relate and connect to each other

great

I use both, but mainly I save the thumb technique for low volume dynamics. When I need to play quietly, but with a fat tone I'll use a palm-mute, thumb technique I learned from Adam Nitti.

Like someone posted earlier, it's just another technique to have at your disposal. I use it alot at the beginning of any sounds that start with acoustic guitar...after the acoustic intro I'll come in quietly adding just a bit of bottom to the mix. Depending on the sound, I may continue to use this technique during the verse. It really depends on the dynamics of the sound. When the band gets louder and I need to punch through the mix, it's back to finger style.

Also, this technique works well for fretted and fretles.
