Please Help Me Learn to Mute

I am having problems with muting my strings. I can't stretch my hand far enough to have a finger on each string at all times. So I have extreme hum overload. Any suggestions?

Mute the low strings with your right hand thumb (see the floating thumb thread) and the high strings with your left hand fingers.

That sounds so easy...except that I'm a thumber. Should I just make the switch and play the "right" way?

how many strings do you have that you can't stretch across?!

i usually mute the strings higher strings with my left hand and the lower with my right, dont really think about it though, just kinda do it

Nah. Just use your left hand to mute higher strings and if you're plucking with your thumb then mute the strings below it with the base of your palm

I put my pinky finger on the string I'm trying to mute it might seam weird but it works. My guitarist ranks on me for it every chance he gets though.

When I finger, thumb or pick what I'm playing I'll mute using my left pinky and index finger behind it. So if Im playing a riff and I wanna include a mute after hitting the 5th fret on A, relax your hand so your not fretting the note, and keep your ring finger around the third fret. This will help mute any harmonics you might otherwise hear.
That being said, when slapping I mute with my entire left hand laying across the neck and plucking with my right hand using either my index or middle finger.
I hope this is comprehensive

Try this method, i'm learning it myself. Seems to work for me, i need to practice it more to become more fluent at it.
