Plucking Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I play fingerstyle and absolutely love to do so, and I've become pretty good at it, but I've recently grown upset with myself because I can hear my finger hit the string below it creating a "thump", and when I play a bassline I think is pretty shnazzy, it gets overshadowed by the constant "thumping" and it's driving me crazy. Any tips, exercises, ANYTHING, to fix this would be GREATLY appreciated.

how long have you been playing? it's just a control thing, your fingers will learn when to stop.

also make sure you're contacting the strings with the VERY TIPS of your finger. if you're plucking too far down on your finger you're going to have to apply more force to get the finger across the string and it will be a sudden release which could explain the thump you get on the next string.

Thanks guys, I tried your suggestions but they didn't seem to make much of a difference, as that is pretty much how I play already.

This is pretty much what my plucking sound like.

Try lightening up your force on the fingers, I think this is where your getting your noise bleed problem, too much force overplaying and interfering with the other strings. The guy in the vid is using a 1 finger technique, seems to be hitting a bit hard there to me, getting the clack/noise /whatever. Lightening up a little and having more control and accuracy over your technique will clean things up a quite a bit, + work on your left and right hand muting, my 2.
