A great book for learning about different approaches to complex rhythms is by Matthew Montfort of the band Ancient Futures. it's called Ancient Traditions, Future Possibilities.

Excellent stuff. It looks at 3 different approaches (there are a lot of ways to approach this) - West African, North Indian, and Balinese.

You've inspired me to dig out my copy and work the exercises on bass.
