Popping and pickguard?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, just a quickie here, is it wrong if when I'm popping I keep hitting the pickguard with my index or middle finger when I'm going under the string?

It's making a tick or tack sound every time. When amplified it's not really that noticeable but when it's low volume or when I'm practicing acoustically, it really bugs me.

Wonder what I'm doing wrong.

You're not doing anything wrong. Most basses with a pickguard have less room to pluck, as well as the noise it makes when you hit plastic that's laying on top of the wood. You could practice a lighter touch, or turn it up louder.

I have a noticeable dip in the front of my Schecter bass from my finger hitting the body while plucking. There's also a fairly large section of the pick guard on my P that is all scratched up from the same thing. There really isn't any problem with what you're doing, other than it will cause scratches on the guard.

I think it it going to be tough not to do that. Probably depends somewhat on the setup of the bass, your hands, and your slapping technique.

My first bass looks like that photo, even more beat up in exactly the same spot. Fingernails getting whammed into the body over and over and over eventually leave their marks.
